The 60x60 Project, begun 10 years ago by Robert Voisey of Vox Novus, has become one of the most engaging programs of new music around the world.  Each program (or “mix”) includes sixty 1-minute-long recorded compositions presented without pause, and typically includes works by leading contemporary composers and sound artists of all kinds alongside fresh works by students.  As the program has begun attracting more and more entries from composers all over, more mixes are produced each year, sometimes centered around a particular theme or a group of composers (works by women composers, composers from particular nations, works using voice, etc.).

This year marks the first ever mix centered on environmental themes.  Composers from over a dozen countries are represented, and pieces including everything from field recordings at unique locations to sounds from outer space, from insect and animal sounds (yes, birds and bees, and also various pets) to urban noises, to expressions of the feelings people have for the places they inhabit, to lots of water sounds, will be heard.  Among the composers whose work is included are Joan LaBarbara, Joel Chadabe, Hye Kyung Lee, Judith Statin, Richard Festinger, and, from Mission Viejo, Michael Golden.
