The Nation’s Quest For A Permanent Solution To The Disposal Of High Level Radioactive Waste

Please visit the National Academy of Sciences website to RSVP.

The absence of a permanent solution to the disposal of high activity radioactive waste after several decades of nuclear power plant operation does not speak well for the nation’s will to solve this problem.  The interim solution of on-site storage and management, while successful and safe, does not position the nuclear energy option favorably for  the nation’s long term quest for clean sources of energy independent of foreign suppliers.  The leading contender for permanently isolating high activity waste from the biosphere is deep geologic disposal.
